Looking Beyond the Individual

There are hundreds of therapeutic approaches available today, and each offers something valuable. What works profoundly for one person may not be the right fit for another. At Equillation, we deeply respect the diversity of therapeutic models and the important work being carried out across many different disciplines.

So why did we choose Family Systemic Constellations?

Because they invite us to look beyond the individual.

Many therapeutic approaches focus on a person's thoughts, emotions, behaviours, or life experiences. Systemic Constellations offer another perspective by asking a different question:

"What might be happening within the wider system?"

Every one of us belongs to many systems - our family, our culture, our communities, our workplaces, and the generations that came before us. These systems shape us in ways we are often completely unaware of.

Sometimes, the difficulties we experience in life cannot be fully understood by looking only at the individual.

Hidden loyalties.

Unresolved grief.

Family secrets.

Excluded family members.

Inherited beliefs.

Transgenerational patterns.

Entanglements across generations.

These unconscious dynamics can continue to influence our relationships, our choices, our health, our sense of belonging, and the way we experience the world, often without us ever realising they exist.

Family Systemic Constellations offer a way of bringing these hidden dynamics into awareness.

They do not seek to assign blame or identify someone who is "at fault." Instead, they gently reveal patterns and relationships that may previously have remained unseen, creating opportunities for greater understanding, compassion, and movement within the system.

At the heart of this work are the Orders of Love, first described by Bert Hellinger. These guiding principles recognise that healthy systems tend to function when certain conditions are honoured, including:

  • Everyone has an equal right to belong.

  • Everyone has their rightful place within the system.

  • We honour the balance of giving and receiving.

  • We recognise fate and take responsibility for our own lives while respecting the journeys of others.

Alongside these principles, our students also study the Orders of Helping - an ethical framework that supports practitioners in facilitating with humility, respect, and integrity.

Learning how to help is just as important as understanding what we are helping.

As facilitators, our role is not to rescue, advise, or direct a client's journey. Instead, we learn to hold space with curiosity, compassion, and respect, allowing insights to emerge without imposing our own agenda.

These principles form the foundation of ethical systemic practice and underpin everything we teach at Equillation.

When combined with our philosophy of horse-centred practice and a deep understanding of equine behaviour, Systemic Constellations offer a unique way of working - one that considers not only the individual, but the wider web of relationships and experiences that shape their life.

We believe that by understanding the system, honouring what has come before, and facilitating with integrity, we create the possibility for profound insight, meaningful change, and lasting transformation.

Because sometimes, the answers we are searching for are not found within the individual alone.

Sometimes, they are waiting to be discovered within the system itself.
